Climbing a mountain is a lot like starting your sales career. There are a lot of ups and downs and different obstacles to overcome, but when you get to the top you want to do it again. Getting to the top can be hard and there may be moments where you want to call it quits and turn around, but when you finally reach that summit, you never regret the view and feeling of accomplishment.
The thrill of climbing above the ‘treeline’ is something we have found that all sales professionals share. It is those top performers and innovators who share the same competitive mentality of venturing out into an unconquered terrain and becoming trailblazers.
Even though I feel as if I am just starting to build my sales career, I have actually been going above the ‘treeline’ for years. I started climbing mountains with a 4,000 ft elevation when I was 13. When I first started climbing it was difficult and scary and I didn’t know if I could reach the top. There were trails where I lost my footing, slipped and fell, and got a few bumps and bruises, but I didn’t give up. I had to train, learn from mistakes, try again and believe that I could do it in order to reach the top.
I have climbed many mountains and each one is different and each one requires a different mindset. I have never been scared of challenging myself and pushing my mind and body to the limit. I’m the same way in sales. I have to believe in myself and push myself through the difficult parts.
If you look at something big like a mountain and tell yourself you can’t make it to the top, odds are you won’t because you already quit before you even started. As I start my sales career, I have realized how climbing mountains and sales are so much alike. It’s all about being positive, overcoming the obstacles and finally getting above the ‘treeline’ that makes all the hard work with it. You’ll never regret the feeling of knowing you accomplished something great, and the view is worth it.
